Melatonin is something I have used to help me get to sleep on those nights I just knew it wasn’t going to come easy.  My experience was that when I took it a half hour before bed, I could easily go to sleep.  I wasn’t aware that it also has some benefit in synchronizing body rythems but this would also be great for travelers because going from one time zone to another can really be hard on the bodies natural clock.

There should be functioning methionine cycles in every cell in your body.  The folate cycle is the source for the methylgroup that re-methylates homocysteine back into methionine.  If the liver detox pathways are not functioning properly this may not be happening.

Through the methylation pathways hydroxycobalamin vitamin becomes methyl B-12 which donates its methyl group to homocysteine.

MTR is deactivated by many factors, it is profoundly sensitive to mercury – nonogram levels will completely inhibit MTR.  MTR is a gene pathway in the liver detox system.

Lead, cadmium, arsenic and aluminum will do the same.

Any condition that increases oxidative stress in the cell will inhibit MTR.  If MTR becomes inactive, homocysteine may use a secondary pathway to go directly to methionine.  Or it may transit through the transulfuration pathway which then affects the production of an important anti-oxidant – glutathione.

When functioning optimally, the trans-sulfuration pathway generates glutathione (GSH).  Thus the inactivation of MTR by pro-oxidant conditions mitigates increased activity in the production of a significant anti-oxidant defense molecule.  However helpful oxidative inhibition of MTR may be for producing GSH, it reduces methyl group production and methylation reactions which, as noted earlier are critical.  The function of the organism may be negatively impacted in many ways.

There are two opposing reactions, oxidation which involves the loss of electrons, and reduction which induces their gain.  The balance of these two chemical processes is expressed in a ratio called the reduction/oxidation ratio, the redox ratio.  Optimally, the redox ratio should be high.  The option of gaining electrons should be available.  The loss of electrons, oxidation is burning.  Fire is oxidation.

This is why getting rid of metals and having adequate amounts of nutrients like folic acid, B-12 etc. are so important.   Have your doctor do a nutritional evaluation on you if you have been exposed to metals, which most of us have been.  Raising the glutathione may also help get the methylation going in the cells.

It has been known that exposure to heavy metals creates an acidic environment in the body.  This can allow pathogens to get a foothold.  Some metals like lead and silver also have a direct affect on the gut.

I recently read a research article that indicated the aluminum in vaccines as well as other adjuvants may be causing immune reactions in children.

There have been many articles written lately linking chronic fatigue to auto-immune conditions brought on by toxins like heavy metals.
